IV STREET CLUB MEMBERSHIP ADMISSION PROCESS
Gentlemen of The Fourth Street Club,
New members are the lifeblood of The Fourth Street Club, and the Admissions Committee depends vitally on the members to introduce like-minded candidates. Below is a newly-adopted policy for our candidate proposal process. Please review it carefully. The Fourth Street Club is thriving. Our Social, Golf and Games Chairs, all volunteers, have worked very hard to create and organize outstanding events and our Communications Chair and Treasurer have announced and reported on those events and kept our accounting on each event accurate. We thank them all for their extensive efforts. It is no surprise that all of this activity has created increased enthusiasm for our special club.
We are very close to our membership cap, and we have had a robust list of potential members for several years. The Admissions Committee has prudently worked through this list over the last few years and has added new members to our ranks deliberately, with appropriate vetting. We will endeavor to do so going forward by electing new members no more than twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
Six new members were elected at our Admission Committee meeting last week: Jamie Barrett, Nat Hamilton, James Kelley, Jim Logue, Jorge Pelaez, Vic Rainsford. In addition, Henry Winsor was re-instated to membership. Please reach out to our Secretary for Life Eric Hoerner with any questions.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas Lunch & Sing on December 12th at the Acorn Club.

The Membership Proposal Process
- The Fourth Street Club places great importance on the quality of its membership. We welcome and encourage Members to propose highly qualified candidates. The role of the Proposer is an important one. The Proposer is personally vouching for the suitability of the candidate – a serious responsibility never to be taken lightly or without thorough personal knowledge of the candidate. Likewise, the Seconder and Supporters should know the candidate well and be enthusiastic in their support. We are committed to maintaining the superb quality of our membership and depend on the thoughtful diligence of Proposers, Seconders and Supporters to continue this tradition.
- The full Board serves as the Admissions Committee (bylaw).
- While we welcome guests at most events, Members should refrain from discussing a guest as a membership candidate until Step 5 (below) has been completed.
- Legacy candidates should be proposed by a Member from their generation rather than by their father, father-in-law or grandfather.
- The first step in the proposal process is for the Proposer to send a letter to the Secretary. This letter should include the candidate’s name, address, occupation, educational background, club memberships, approximate age, immediate family information and the length of time that the Proposer has known the candidate. This application request letter will be considered by the Admissions Committee and may result in the candidate’s name being circulated to the Membership for comment. A decision will then be made whether or not to grant an application and formally commence the membership process.
- Upon receipt of the application, the Proposer should secure a seconding letter and two supporting letters from Members other than the Officers (bylaw). The Seconder and Supporters should preferably be in an age bracket near that of the candidate. The candidate must be known by at least four members of the Board (bylaw). Our First Tuesday Lunches are an excellent opportunity for candidates to meet Board members.
- Additional candidates customarily may not be proposed by a Member until the processing of the current candidate has been completed. In a similar vein, the Proposer should be a Member for at least two years before proposing a candidate.
- The Admissions Committee generally meets twice a year, in November and May, to vote on completed applications. The Admissions Committee need not state its reasons for any action it may take on proposals for membership and shall not divulge information as to its discussions or decisions, except by notice of election or rejection to the Proposer and Seconder.
